As we encounter the power and
mercy of God, we also encounter his call to follow him. Then as we follow his
call our faith grows, and we encounter more and more, the meaning of our
vocation in Christ Jesus. A keystone of this process is humility. During the
Eucharist, we come to that significant point in the liturgy, where we offer one
another the peace. It of course signifies all that we meant to live out in
terms of our Christian community, in that in offering one another the peace, we
seek to live in peace and forgiveness with one another, but also, we commit to
live in a community of hope. This has been set before us in the example of
Christ, who expressed the ultimate humility in all things.
He is the centre of all that
we do as Christian community and therefore his example of true peace and
humility must be our focus. Especially at this time, as we celebrate the feast
of All Saints, we give thanks for all those who have gone before us in the
faith of Christ and remember those who have expressed and taught the faith to
us, as we have sought to follow his call. We give thanks for the support of those
who have followed the example of Christ in bringing hope and grace to others.
Jesus said that it is in loving him and one another, that the world will come
to know that we are his disciples. It is our example as we seek to follow him that
makes the difference.
